Erling Haaland Chant: Lyrics, Tune and the Story Behind Ha Ha Ha Haaland

The Haaland chant is the one with the laugh in it. "Ha-ha-ha-Haaland" is sung at the Etihad after every goal, and there have been a lot of goals. Here is where it came from, what the words are, and what it is sung to.

The Tune

The melody is Bella Ciao, the Italian folk song that came back into fashion through the series Money Heist. Manchester City fans fitted Haaland's name to it within weeks of his arrival in the summer of 2022.

The Lyrics

The refrain runs:

"Haaland, Haaland, he's a blue just like his dad, now he's at the Etihad, ha-ha-ha-Haaland, hey."

The "blue just like his dad" line is about Alfie Haaland, who played for City in the early 2000s, and Erling was born in Leeds while his father was playing in England. The "ha-ha-ha" is the hook everyone knows.

Where It Started

It began in the pubs near the stadium in 2022, spread across social media and was in the stands within the season. A studio version by CTID, "Haaland (Ha Ha Ha)", turned it into a streaming hit with millions of plays, and there is a Champions League remix from the 2023 run. Haaland has said he hears it constantly and has laughed along when it goes up after a goal.

Why It Works

Bella Ciao is a call-and-response melody with a repeated phrase built into it, which is exactly what a terrace needs: no words to learn, one name to shout, and a laugh in the middle. It is the same DNA as "olé, olé, olé" and every other chant that travels.
