Liverpool Chants: The Words, the Tunes and the Stories Behind Them

Liverpool's Kop has been writing songs since the 1960s, and it still adds new ones every season. Here are the chants that matter, the tunes they borrow and how each one began.

You'll Never Walk Alone

The anthem, and the club motto on the crest.

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote it for the 1945 Broadway musical Carousel. Liverpool band Gerry and the Pacemakers released their version in October 1963, produced by George Martin, and it spent four weeks at number one in the UK.

Anfield played the week's top 10 before kickoff, and the Kop sang along. When the record dropped out of the charts, fans asked where their song had gone, and it has been sung before every home game since.

Allez Allez Allez

The European away-day song.

It is sung to L'Estate Sta Finendo, a 1985 Italian pop hit by Righeira that fans in Italy and Spain had already turned into a chant. Liverpool supporters first sang it in Porto in February 2018, in the Champions League round of 16, and Jamie Webster wrote the version the club's fans sing today.

The Lyrics (opening lines):

"We conquered all of Europe, and we will never stop."

Poor Scouser Tommy

The oldest story song on the Kop, from the Bill Shankly years of the 1960s.

It tells the story of a Liverpool soldier in World War Two, sung to Red River Valley, and then switches tunes for its best-known line:

"I am a Liverpudlian, I come from the Spion Kop."

Verses about Ian Rush were added after the 5-0 derby win over Everton on November 6, 1982. Some verses mock rival fans; this post leaves those out.

The Fields of Anfield Road

Sung to The Fields of Athenry, the 1979 Irish folk song by Pete St. John.

A Liverpool supporter rewrote it, with the chorus built around watching King Kenny and Steve Heighway on the wing. A 2009 recording reached number 14 in the UK.

The Mo Salah Chant

The chant that made headlines around the world.

It is sung to Good Enough by the 1990s band Dodgy, and started in February 2018, in Salah's first season at Anfield.

The Lyrics (the key lines):

"If he's good enough for you, he's good enough for me. If he scores another few, then I'll be Muslim too."

Fans praised it as a stand against Islamophobia. Salah left Liverpool at the end of the 2025-26 season with 255 goals in 435 appearances.

The Current Player Chants

• Virgil van Dijk: sung to Dirty Old Town, and caught on during the 2018-19 season, a song about the calm center half who wears the number four
• Hugo Ekitike: sung to Do the Conga, first heard at the Bournemouth game that opened the 2025-26 season

The Newest Arrival: Bradley Barcola

Liverpool signed Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain on August 31, 2026. He wears number 29. Sky Sports reported the fee as 106 million pounds guaranteed, making him the club's second most expensive signing after Alexander Isak.
