Ask who the greatest soccer player of all time is and you get four names back, in a different order every time: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pele and Diego Maradona. Nobody outside those four wins the argument. What changes is how you weigh a World Cup against a Ballon d'Or, and a career of 900 goals against one perfect tournament.

Pele and Maradona have no Ballon d'Ors because the award was for European players only until 1995. 1. Lionel Messi

Eight Ballon d'Ors, the most in history. Four Champions Leagues and thirteen league titles with Barcelona. The 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, where he was named the tournament's best player, as he had been in 2014.

Then the numbers nobody else touches: 928 career goals and 423 assists, the assist record in the men's game, at 0.79 goals per game. He is the World Cup's all-time top scorer with 21 goals in 34 games, a record he set at the 2026 tournament, where he reached the final at thirty-nine and lost it to Spain after extra time.

The case against him is thin and it is the same case it has always been: he never had to win a World Cup at Ronaldo's age, and Pele won three.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo

The raw totals belong to Ronaldo. 979 career goals, the most in the history of the men's game. 146 international goals in 233 caps, the most by any man. 140 Champions League goals and five Champions League titles, one more than Messi. Five Ballon d'Ors.

He won the European Championship with Portugal in 2016, two Nations Leagues in 2019 and 2025, and played six World Cups, the last of them at forty-one, a Portugal side that went out to Spain in the round of 16 in 2026.

The case against him is the trophy that is missing. Ronaldo never won a World Cup, and his best finish was fourth in 2006.

3. Pele

Three World Cups: 1958, 1962 and 1970. No other man has won three, and he scored twelve World Cup goals along the way, six of them as a seventeen-year-old in Sweden.

Pele scored 77 goals in 92 official games for Brazil and 680 official club goals, almost all of them for Santos. The famous figure of 1,281 goals in 1,363 games includes friendlies and tour matches, which is why it is quoted with an asterisk and why the FIFA totals above are the ones that count.

The case against him is the one every pre-1970s player faces: he never played in Europe, and most of his career is on grainy film rather than in a database.

4. Diego Maradona

Maradona's claim rests on one tournament more than any player on this list. At the 1986 World Cup he scored five goals and created five more in seven games, dragging an ordinary Argentina side to the trophy, with the Hand of God and the goal of the century arriving four minutes apart in the same quarter-final against England.

He then took Napoli, a club that had never won the Italian title, to two Serie A championships. Nobody has ever carried two teams that far on his own.

The case against him is longevity. His peak was short, and the numbers outside it do not compete with the three players above.

The Next Tier

Four more players make every serious shortlist without ever winning the argument:

• Johan Cruyff: three Ballon d'Ors and the player who turned Dutch total football into a philosophy that Barcelona still plays.
• Zinedine Zidane: the 1998 World Cup and the 1998 Ballon d'Or in the same year, and a highlight reel with more touch than anyone here.
• Ronaldo Nazario: two Ballon d'Ors and the 2002 World Cup, won after two knee injuries that would have ended most careers.
• Alfredo Di Stefano: two Ballon d'Ors and the centre of the Real Madrid side that won the first five European Cups from 1956 to 1960. He scored in every one of those finals.

Who Is the Best Soccer Player in the World Right Now?

That is a different question with a different shortlist, and it is decided every October. The 2026 Ballon d'Or is presented in London on 26 October. Lamine Yamal, the 2025 runner-up, is on the thirty-man shortlist at nineteen having won Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup with Spain, and Harry Kane is the bookmakers' favourite.

Until the envelope opens, the honest answer is: it depends whether you count trophies, goals or the eye test, which is exactly the problem with the all-time question too.
